FDA's response to Dairy Farmers of America

Mr. Donald H. Schriver
Executive Vice President
Dairy Farmers of America
10220 N. Ambassador Drive
Post Office Box 909700
Kansas City, Missouri 64190-9700

Dear Mr. Schriver:

This acknowledges receipt of your March 18, 200Ç letter to Dr. Lester M. Crawford, regarding the labeling of milk and dairy products labeled as being free of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) or hormone free. Your letter was forwarded to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) for a response.

You stated that that labeling of milk and milk products as being rBST free or hormone free might be confusing to consumers and could lead to a reduction in the consumption of milk among young children due to misperceived concerns regarding the safety of the milk. In addition, you requested that FDA consider taking an appropriate regulatory response to milk labeling that does not meet the letter and the spirit of the law or FDA's guidance.
